OBD-II the port should be located under the dash near the accelerator pedal.

so it;s OBD2, I've another question please if you are familiar with this, I;ve bought today a HUD, and it supports OBD2, but it doesn't show anyhting but voltage, the users' guide says that if "voltage" is the only thing I can see, no speed meter or anything, then the car is using OBD, and not OBD2. Any ideas about this? ,, I purchased that toy because the dashboard is a bit dark and I can't see the speed pointer.

All cars and light trucks built and sold in the United States after January 1, 1996 were required to be OBD II equipped. So, all 1996 model year cars and light truck are in compliant, even if built in late 1995. Your 1997 Mercury is equipped with the OBD II.
