starting problem

Asked by tomkhmb Jan 09, 2016 at 02:25 PM about the 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis GS

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

the PATS module thinks it has to shut off the engine to keep the car from
being stolen. The engine cranks, starts, immediately shuts off, with the
security system light on top of the dash blinking rapidly. I can reset the
PATS module by turning the key on-off-on-off-on-off, and then the car will
start. Sometimes it takes several such cycles to get it to start. I have had a
dealership diagnose the problem and replace the PATS module and
reprogram the keys, but problem is still here, though not as bad. Cost so
far $540 (yikes!). Problem seems especially bad first thing in the morning
when the car has been cold-soaked overnight. What can be causing this?
And what can be done about it?

It sounds like the pats transciever may be faulty. If you have already replaced the module and programmed keys its the last part available. The transciever is the antenna located around the ignition cylinder. It was a common problem in the late 90's and early 00's.

Sounds correct. I had to have mine replaced in my 2008 Grand Marquis and keys reprogrammed with it. Mike
