My 00' Grand Am Overheats

I have a 2000 Grand Am SE and when I drive it it overheats. I can fill my overflow with
water or antifreeze and at times within a short drive my thermostat dings, when I open
the hood I open the overflow and the oil cap and steam is coming from both. I haven't
seen questions or answers about a steaming engines. Any ideas what might be the
issue?

...well see if the thermo-switch is putting the fans on when they reach boiling temperature....also if your antifreeze hasn't been changed at all it can clobber up a cooling system so the radiator is not exchanging the heat rapidly enough....cooling system flush should put you right...radiators are not expensive either....day long job on your vehicle though~

sounds like your fans arent kicking on, look at a relay switch, or a fuse.

If over heats while driving and at idle I would check for bad water pump, sticking thermostat, collapsing radiator hose or clobbered up radiator. If it mainly overheats at an idle I would check for why fans are not coming on.

I have the same issue with my 99' Grand Am. these comments were a lot of help, now I know what I have to look for. and since I just got a new thermostat I know what needs to be done. thank you
