2000 Pontiac Grand Am SE has squeaking noise coming from steering wheel while turning either direction somewhat often. Help?

It's not a whining like the steering pump, it's
coming directly from the steering wheel in
front of me. A couple years ago the steering
wheel locked up on me while driving the
interstate and I had to jerk it and break
something in there. Hasn't given me any
trouble from that area in 2 years. Thoughts?
