is 164,000 miles good or bad on a 2004 grand am

Thats all relative. It depends on how the vehicle was maintained. If youre thinking of buying one, and the owner A) cant produce maintenance records B) prove to you what has been replaced, then you have to assume youre going to have to put some money into it. At 164k, if the head and intake gaskets havent been done, expect to do them soon. And unless youre doing the work yourself, its not cheap.
Michael is right about the lower intake manifold gasket if it has a V6 engine. Usually the LIM gasket is replaced around 60,000-80,000 miles. They came with bad factory gaskets and only need replacement once. Find out more Grand Am details at GAOwnersClub.com
