I have a 98 grand prix se that has starting problems

The car was over heating on my way back home from work when i try to start the car the key gets stuck in the ignition found the release button and when i tryed to start it no go so i reseted the battery put it back in lights came on and everthing tryed to start it and everthing dies again have no clue wat the problem is any one could help me.

did you check the coolant level and when the engine did run, were there white smoke coming out of the tail pipe?
