My Pontiac grand prix say charging system failure and my steering wheel is hard to turn I drove in a little puddle of water what could it be?

Sounds like the belt that drives the steering pump and alternator needs replacement.

It may also be a bad pulley somewhere causing the belt to slip worse. When you replace the belt make sure every pulley spins freely and fairly noise free. The big pulley shouldn't move without excessive force.

I looked this up and Daniel was right. My serpentine belt came off because my idler tension bracket snapped. Yah extended warranty (second time it came in handy).
