Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I was told I need a catalictic convertor. How much will it cost to put it in? What will happen to car if I wait? How long do I have? One machanic said I do not have to, that they can just keep changing something on it everytime check engine light comes on.

Any car on the road in the United States is required by law to have one. If you have to pass emissions testing then you really need one. The price can vary from store to store but expect to pay a few hundred for one plus a few hours of labor.
I was just informed at a dealership that a new catalytic converter will cost around $1,000.00 to replace. I would like to hear if that is BS or not.
An independent repair shop should be able to do the job for considerably less. Get a few quotes.
