That's what happens in my experience. The fuel lines must be removed from the engine so that the engine can be pulled to do the head gaskets. if the fuel lines aren't capped while removed that leaves plenty of vapor fumes to get inside the passenger area and those smells will come out more prominently when the car is warm (IE when you have the heater on). Give it a spray with some deodorizer and let it air out, it should make a difference.

It's also possible that those lines were twisted or pulled during the head gasket replacement, causing a leak. The fuel lines run under the intake manifold, while the car is running check under there to see if you can smell the source or see any dripping.

I agree.... They messed something up. My first round with my 01 Outback took months. The dealer insisted nothing was wrong, a local mechanic found it and fixed it for $40. The car has almost 300,000 and round two another dealer replaced them again never a problem. Just took my 06 Outback and they were replaced no smells no problem. I'd find another service location.
