the car also needs a top, all the weatherstripping, the cluster seems very dim, some mild
interior work and idles really rough. It was always a dream and now a (mid life) crisis
resolved. Where do I turn? Look and get affordable parts?

One problem to another, That's nice. not! I would search those who specialize in early vettes and classic car parts like ,Ecklers just as an example!
the check engine light is a normal issue with these cars,it may be from a bad sending unit or it may truly need service.you must find a shop there that is able to work on your car.the chevy dealers no longer have the ability to fix all the problems that will arise with the car.you need a full tune up and service and they need to go through the car and check for any problems.if you dont have any records for previous work done on the car i would put a new starter and alternator in now and prepare for the compresser to stop working sooner than later.also dont use any parts from cheap auto zone stores, only use ac delco or better aftermarket parts.upgrade you plugs and wires to a superior brand and install an interstate battery.
i'd put on some sparkplugs and ignition wires and the ignition module below the coils to see if you can do a tune-up to getthe engine to idle smooth. also replace vaccuum hoses.
