Best Gear Oil

Asked by DynomiteCalo Mar 23, 2016 at 11:46 AM about the 2003 Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Impreza 2.5 RS manual shift sound is coarse, so I
checked the gear oil (yellow dipstick on the left (if
you open the hood perspective) or right side of car)
and it was very low. So I won't drive it until I fill it
with gear oil. I'm at 122,000 miles.

My questions are:

1). what's the best gear oil to buy?
2). from where?
3). How much gear oil should I fill.

I heard Redline 75w90 is the way to go, but I
wanted to ask Gurus first. (I did try to look for a
thread on this here but maybe I didn't search the
right question. Any insight would be greatly
appreciated!

Don't waste your money under any circumstances, as the Subie stick trans (and diff) do NOT put much stress on the gear oil. So top it off with any 75 or 80 or 90W molasses and it'll be ok. If what you can see is pretty black maybe you should drain it first and then add the 5qts needed, as it's still an easy and cheap job. I've seen original gear oils last 10+ years in these, so don't sweat it. HOWEVER, if you run too long on very low gear oil you may pick up some noise that might NOT go away with a drain and refill. May still operate quite fine, though. Just save your money, as the higher temp capabilities of RedLine et al our completely wasted on this low temp app.

Thank you so much, so 5 quarts will do because I checked the yellow dipstick and there is ABSOLUTELY NO oil left. So I'll pour in the 5 quarts, right? I read somewhere that it needed 3.7L?
