92 Subaru Legacy clutch problem

Asked by 92legacywagon Dec 03, 2020 at 06:07 PM about the 1992 Subaru Legacy L Wagon AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

92 Legacy AWD Wagon, 175,000 miles. Engine
running, put in gear, no grinding at all, let out the
clutch, car does not move. Clutch action feels ok,
clutch fork moves with clutch pedal. Can put in
gear WITHOUT using the clutch, engine running.
Any ideas causing this problem?? Thanks.

Sounds like 1 of 2 things. Either the clutch isnt fully disengaging or that it's not fully going into gear. From the description I'm leaning more towards it not disengaging

I can put in 5 fwd gears and reverse without using the clutch sitting still. I loosened the cable adjustment till it there was slack, did not change.

The fact that you can shift through the gears clutchless hints to not disengaging. Stretched or broken cables, hydraulic leak in the clutch hydraulic system, linkage out of adjustment, and incompatable parts are the most common causes

That logic is backwards? My guess is that the clutch driven disc is simply completely worn down so the system spins without friction. One of us needs more coffee...might be me!

I agree the clutch is not disengaging, but why? The clutch fork moves fine. Cable only, no hydraulic slave, hill-hold cable disconnected.
