Overheating issue.
Asked by Wendell Oct 07, 2017 at 06:28 PM about the 2006 Chevrolet Equinox LS AWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
My 2006 equinox started overheating. So I
replaced the thermostat, think that was the
problem. Usually is. But it still overheated. So then,
I replaced the water pump. No joy. Still overheats.
Then I noticed the egr tube was cracked. So I
replaced it. Still overheats. What's next? There are
no leaks, and no coolant mixed with oil, so I don't
think it's an issue with the heads. So what could it
be? Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried to check if it’s the heater core that is inside the dash?
im having a similar problem with a 2009. I have already replaced the cap on the overflow tank.. I have no cap on the radiator. I replaced the water pump, thermostat.. my car overheats when sitting idle and spews out antifreeze but where its coming from I don't know. what do I do next
How do I now if I blew the motor ... it makes a ticking noise
Did you ever find the problem? I am having the same issues, thanks...
See if the cooling fans are coming on. Thats the biggest issue with these. And also burping the system if its been low on coolant. It might have a air pocket in the cooling system. Btw a heater core has nothing to do with overheating.. Even if it were plugged.vitbwoukd be nobdiff than having the ac on because the heater control valve would have the coolant floww closed.
I'm having my 05 to continuously overheat. I have changed the thermostat, water pump, radiator, heat core hose, and head gaskets. It still is overheating. The fans are running on the car. I dont know what more it can be. Please help
I have changed water pump and thermostat and I'm still overheating.. I don't want to keep money into this car if there is no solution.. I keep seeing the same thing for everyone's car,, I just got this car less than 6 months ago. Please if anyone has the solution please help!
Same issue with my 2005 chnged everything except heater core and radiator but in my case someone put 2 bottles of block stuff in radiator so had to have that cleaned out and flushed. I think these were made bad and think maybe get a lawsuit with company to have them recalled. I bought it and ran 1 week and had it fixed 10 times for over heating and no heat or little heat. I have nothing to drive and no money to buy anything at all. These should be recalled and money back for all we have spent on parts that didn't need replaced.

So I took my car to a shop and they burped my cooling system, it worked fine for 68 miles then I noticed it getting hot , but cooled back down before I got home. Worked okay for local trips, to/from work for about a week tried to drive it out further last week and failed about 70 miles before I had to pull over and let it cool down before I traveled back. That trip was too much because now it's back to where it started but not as bad.. seems like it cooler while I'm driving. If I sit parked or at a light for too long it will start to idle and begin overheating. I am returning it to the shop tomorrow and will keep you all updated
I have an 06.....same issue...overheating. Replaced radiator, hoses, heatercore, water pump, thermostat, overflow container. Had the system bleed. .....off and on over past year it overheats during "city driving" . .....but on the highway it seems to do ok. No loss of antifreeze either.....in the Winter Ive lost heat......no shop can seem to make any since of it. Also had the car tested by 2 different shops....no blown head gasket either. I forgot....i also had EGR plug sensor replaced..This car has become a money pit!....BTW.....when it does overheat.....i pull over and wait untill it has cooled before driving any further as well.
Update: I didn't return my car to the shop. I simply made sure all my fluids were full ( brake, coolant, oil) did an oil change and so far so good.. I was skeptical about posting because my luck as soon as I think the problem is fixed and I open my mouth it starts acting up again, but thus far, since changing my oil my car is driving much better! Not idling and hasn't overheating since (city or highway) .. hopefully I just needed new oil I knew I needed an oil change, but if that was really the issue I'm amazed.. I also mixed my coolant with an overheating coolant that is supposed to lower engine temp 25 degrees. No issues when stopped in traffic or parked thus far.. but it has only been 2 days since the oil change
I have 06 chev equinox too 150k miles. Overheating, changed WP,radiator and thermostat. Still overheating. Although now i notice the new WP i just replaced is now leaking again so I'll replace again. But dies anyone have idea of what i can do. I notice steam coming out from vent in front of the windshield at the middle region. Does this mean anything? Any help will do, thanks
I actually have not had many problems and I did have my cooling system burped again or bled, that seemed to help a lot.. I took a road trip to Columbus and back to West Virginia and she worked fine. I do notice if I sit in traffic or in a Drive-Thru the temperature gauge will go past half but it'll go back down if I start driving again I definitely recommend bleeding your cooling system and see how that works for your vehicle
I installed a new water pump and bled the system. Car was at idle for 30minutes. All seemed normal initially the temperature guage didn't go past mid point throughout the 30minutes but i noticed that i had a rush of steam coming out from my vents and entire car was filled with steam pls note that heater was on. Also i heard bubbling noises from underneath driver side dashboard and my coolant reservoir gave same sound as well and tge coolant level increased on its own. Any ideas what's happening?
I'll replace heater core first and observe while subtly hoping no head gasket has blown

I have a 2015 Equinox. The temperature gauge goes well above midway to just under high while driving. The heat blows cold air when stopped. It has never truly "overheated", but I do not drive it more than 25 miles at a time. I have replaced the heater core, the thermostat x 2, the cam sensor x 2, the cam sensor solenoids x 2, a piston kit, rear main seal, radiator, water pump, and battery x 3. (Obviously not all of this was related to over heating.) It still over heats. The dealership does not stand by its product. I have bought brand new chevys straight off the lot since I was 18 (now 40), I will never buy another after this experience and the way it has been handled. This vehicle is absolute junk. After investigating these issues, it is obvious Chevy has built a junk product with the same issues year after year and failed to fix them at the consumer's expense.
Has anyone actually figured out a solution to this problem? Changed head gasket or changed the heads to see if it work?
Same issues on my 2012 chevy antifreeze is not leaking temp high ,has anyone fixed there problem?
Change the intake gaskets they go bad on the corner ends the seals dont hold within the gasket i have replaced countless also dont forget to bleed the cooling system to rid of any air within the system there should be a bleeder screw on the tube. Always open when refilling the coolant until the coolant comes out in a steady stream. Worked for me and my clients are happy.
Hello I have a 2007 chevy. I had same issue overheating while idling and stop at lights or for trains. I have change water pump, thermostat, solenoids, sensors, head gaskets, even dam calipers rotors ,brakes , transmission. Intake valve. I have sunk thousands into this car. I would love for everyone to get together to start a civil suit against chevy. If anyone is interested please email me at sandrafahey35@gmail.com. I am sick of this car. I had to get the muffler system done too. This is ridiculous. Chevy does not stand behind there cars. I had a chevy Malibu and I returned it it was a lemon and I had to go through a judge bc they don't give a shit tour car is always at the shop and sinking money into it. I need to recip the money I have spent. Can someone help me figure out what I need to do now. Please help

Same happens to my 2007 equinox,; since I noticed water droplets in back of oil cap I found out that exhaust gaskets need to b replace since water vapor getting in oil case.
Same happens to my 2007 equinox,; i did a radiator flush 4 months ago and fix the problem for 3 or 4 months but overheating came back; since I noticed water droplets in back of oil cap I found out that exhaust gaskets need to b replace since water vapor getting in oil case.
This should solve this common problem if you've checked and/or replaced water pump, any bad hoses or clamps, radiator, thermostat, and your fans are operating correctly. Loosen coolant filling tank cap (if engine is cool only). Remove coolant bleeder valve. Cut bottom of a plastic water bottle off and secure mouth over bleeder valve opening. Start engine and turn on heater. Add coolant into bottle opening until there is resistance and little or no bubbling. Quickly pull of water bottle, replace bleeder valve and tighten. Turn heater off, tighten coolant tank cap and let the engine run for about 10 minutes. If your engine temperature continues to overheat - you may have bad head/manifold gasket(s).
Same problem. Replaced head gasket. Worked for 1 year and then blew the heater core. 2007 with 220,000 km on it.
Intake manifold gasket. Everyone this is possibly the problem.
I was about to take my engine down, but realized that the engine had no water in the oil, and the reservoir tank wasn't getting excessive pressure build-up. Since the water pump isn't leaking, fans are working fine, and no radiator leaks, I was stumped! After running the engine with heater on for 15 minutes and then bleeding the air from the lines, it ran cool for days again. However, after driving on the highway at 70 mph for an hour I saw the temp was still running cool. I pulled over to check the pressure and there was water overflow when I shut it down. That leaves only a bad radiator or faulty water pump and neither are leaking. I'm under the assumption that the radiator for these vehicles aren't large enough for the engine. I'm going to change out the radiator to a larger capacity and a high performance water pump to see what happens.
I got same problem with my 06 we have done everything intake, water pump, thermostat, radiator, heater core. Someone told us the factor thermostat has hole and ones you get at parts store dont have hole in them and factory ones do. So that's our next step drill a hole in thermostat we will let you know
Check to see if the hoses going to the heater core are getting hot. They will be cooler than the other cooling system hoses if no water is flowing through them. If the hoses do not seem hot, there are two likely possibilities: one is that the cooling system has air trapped in it that is preventing hot water from getting to the heater core, and the other is that something, perhaps a kinked hose under the dash, is restricting water flow through the heater core. If you squeeze the hoses as if to close them off while the heater is "on" you may be able to feel water moving through the hose. THESE FIXED MINE

I have a 2009 Chevy equinox with 150,000 miles on it and it overheats when I’m idling so I took it in to get fixed and the mechanic said it was the head gasket so he said I can replace it for 2000.00 or put another engine in it with 80,000 miles on it for 3000.00 so of course I picked the engine with the 80k bcuz it comes with a 6 month warranty...after he replaces the engine he calls and says it’s still overheating and he believes it’s the radiator bcuz he already replaced the thermostat so I’m hoping this does the trick but who knows with these mechanics now a days
I have a 2009 chevy equinox I just bought 2 weeks ago and I noticed when i first bought the vehicle it didnt heat up when id first start it up in the morning and as soon as id start it the fans would instantly start running when it's 10 degrees outside. Once u started driving thought it would start heating up and everything was ok. But then one day when idling it started overheating and blowing only cold air so my bf checked my antifreeze but as soon as he started taking the lid off it started bubbling very very bad and was coming right out of the coolant box.. after that it stopped overheating and I had heat again but few days later started doing it again but this time even when he let all the air out it didnt matter so he hooked his tester up and said i had a bad thermostat so he changed it but still only cold air and bubbly anti freeze and u can smell anti freeze when in the vehicle but i dont see anything leaking and my oil looks fine my anti freeze looks fine and clean so im lost one person said head gasket but other said heater core so idk what to even try
I found my problem. Prior to purchasing my used vehicle, the owner had her mechanic use "Block Sealer." The erratic overheating problem surfaced after I changed the entire cooling system. The clean coolant flushed out the particles blocking water entering the oil at the site of defective head gasket. I ran it less than 10 minutes and watched the temp go from steady cool to overheating in less than 10 minutes. I checked the oil stick and, sure enough, I finally saw the oil starting to turn milky. Anyone who owns these cars should invest in a rebuild of the upper engine (if it wasn't run too long with water in the crankcase), or, buy another vehicle. I may initiate a class action lawsuit against General Motors for their intentional misconduct in selling vehicles with a known engine defect!

I had same issues try oil change crazy as it sounds it fixed my 2005 equinox
If you need to check for exhaust gasses in your cooling system (blown head gasket, cracked head, etc.) most auto parts stores that rent tools will have a combustion gas tester. It is a glass/plastic tube with a tapered rubber insert on the bottom and a bulb on the top. It is filled with a blue liquid. Following the instructions you should get, if the fluid turns yellow combustion gases are getting into your cooling system (bad gasket, head, block etc.) at this point you need to see an auto repair shop or try a chemical sealer. A lot of mechanics will tell you these sealers do not work. It is a crap shoot. Depending on what the defect is it may or may not work. The usual cost for one of these sealers is around $25. The cost of engine teardown and repair will be much more. I tried Kseal and it did not work.I then tried a Bars Leak product and it worked. (After flushing out the first sealer). Been over 3 months now and no overheating. I am a retired ASE mechanic. There has been a lot of advancement in the last ten years in automotive chemical additives. You should do your research and decide if you want to try them or not.
Hello everyone i have a 07 and having the same issue.I just bought the car and the first day to drive it.And it happen to me the overheating.I told my husband why the car is overheating. The person never told me about the overheating.Im soo angry i told him lets buy the thermostat maybe is that.So my husband change it took it for a ride got on the highway came back on the street on the red light. It started overheating again i started going off what f*** its wrong now.So he thought and said when i change the thermostat.it never shoot water out.So i told him it suppose to he said yes.But it didnt so he said it could be that the radiator is clog.So now thats the next step if is that i will let you guys know good luck everyone.
jeezo peets!!! exact same issue with my 2006 equinox. no circulation at all. replaced water pump...thermostat...O2 sensors. heater core was flushed and checked. the car will not run more than 10 minutes before overheating and shutting down the car. i can see from the resevoir that there is no flow at all. had the lines pulled and flushed and still nothing. this sucks. i cannot afford another car and now have to ride a bike to work in the cold. also have what appears to be "steam bake off" from somewhere under the water pump area but can.t find anything. oh yea....no heat at all.
