99 Legacy Outback 2.5 H4 to 99 2.2 swap?

Asked by Salpizz Sep 01, 2017 at 12:42 PM about the 2000 Subaru Outback Limited Wagon

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2.5 H4, I found a 99 2.2 out of a legacy (junk yard
motor). I've read that this would be a plug and play swap
but I've also read that you have to change came gears or
something..can you guys let me know what's what?

Thanks in advance.

You should be able to find more info on an actual outback forum. I'm sure it's been done.

Many parts to swap (inc ECM). But you'll also find that the 2.2 SOHC is woefully underpowered to move the mass of the OB. Subie tried it in 1995 5sp OBs with poor results. With the 4EAT it'd be even slower!
