radio reception on a 2001 Subaru outback

Hi Kinker, question, when you said that you upgraded your radio, what did you upgrade to? And, you said that your lights stopped working? Sounds like you might have an electrical problem and maybe need professional help. I'm sure that a good radio shop can get you back on the static free system. Good luck.

Hey Mark the Subaru radio had poor reception on some of the channels . the radio display lights stopped working and buying the after market radio was cheaper than bringing it to a shop. i upgraded the radio to a "boss" radio the reception is still not any better than with the Subie radio but at least now i can see what station i am on

Hi Kinker, well, sounds like you are making it work for you. By the way, I have to say, I'm very impressed that your cost per mile is so LOW on your car. Let's say that you've spent $900 to purchase your car and another $1,100 for a total of $2,000 and driven 45,000 miles. That would be less than 5 cents per mile! By the way, did you read the post about the guy who has a 2010 Subaru Outback like mine with the CVT and has 290,000 miles and counting. I really think these cars CAN make it to 300,000 miles. And, the guy with 290k, has never had any engine or transmission work done on his car. Great job on yours. ---Mark

Thanks Mark , and I was wondering if I tried a different Antenna if that would improve my radio receptions. I have a friend who drives a Forrester and he said his radio comes in lousy too , maybe it is a inherent issue with the Subarus

I know this is an old series of posts but I had bad radio reception on my 2006 Outback wagon. After hunting on the web I learned that the antenna wire breaks inside the rubber boot at the top of the rear hatch door. Peel back the boot. One of the wires in the bundle is for the antenna booster. The fix is to use a needle nosed continuity tester to find the break, then cut strip the wires and splice in a new piece of flexible auto wire, I soldered in my new wire and covered the bare joints with shrink wrap. That fixed the problem and I have good AM and FM reception. Recently I noticed my backup lights are out and I'll bet its the same issue.

David- do yourself a favor and and get a Sirius XM radio and subscription.....you won't have any bad radio reception.... it's satellite... By the way...a really nice sound system even in an older car is one way to really enchance the enjoyment of the older vehicle......it's cheaper than buying a new car! Go to a local mobile electronics shop and look for a really nice sound system.... Alpine and Kenwood are top brands.

Mark1952 ...Sirius Radio is good, but when You live in oregon and you are in the woods a lot.......maybe 50/50 at best
