Why my 96 carmy won't go into drive

My car was making this loud grinding sound and
when I put my foot on the brake it would shift to
the left or when I would drive it some times shift
outta near where , when I put my foot on the gas he
was take a while before taking off . . NOW my car
won't go into drive but just in reverse  , what's
wrong with my car ?
