Timing belt

Asked by Jacob Jul 15, 2019 at 12:20 AM about the 1999 Toyota Camry CE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 99 Toyota Camry. The timing belt is bad on
it. A mechanic friend looked at it and said bc the
timing belt went bad & stopped then my manifold &
such will be bad. But I've been reading a little up on
this issue & I'm not sure. My engine is 1999 Toyota
Camry 4 Cylinders G 2.2L MFI DOHC so does that
make it a non interface or whatever meaning that if
I simply change out the belt, it should be fine.
please help.

I looked ur car up. From what I see ur car is a non interference engine. It says USUALLY it does not get damaged if belt breaks etc. What that basically means is two systems are working together at same time and as such don't crash into each other such as on a interference engine (which yours is not). Typically you can just change belt, make sure the cars 2 systems (the pistons and valves) are timed correctly and it SHOULD be fine. Show him this post band ask him why he's saying this? Or ask another mechanic. I am a lil suspicious?
