2000 Camry LE never had a problem, started and it didn't engage started screaming and wouldn't stop even when I pulled the key. Had to try to restart and then it turned off. Solenoid? Expensive?

Am elderly and on fixed income... will the solenoid fix this?

Yes, starter solenoid. If you remove it yourself and get it rebuilt at a starter shop, it will cost you $50-$80. If you bring it to a shop, you can expect to pay much more.
If it keeps getting stuck it will eventually damage the teeth of your fly wheel. It may not happen again. If it does, get the starter replaced.

So.... it's okay if I try it again? It might work a while without failing? I know I'm bothering you with this but I am very worried... bought this car new and she has never given me much trouble (we won't talk about her drivers side front window) and I have zero money for repairs, so will have to beg and borrow to get anything done. Live where there is no public transportation! I assume if I start it and it does that horrific screeching and staccato sound again that I have ruined the flywheel (at least!) Would it help to oil anything? I have been smelling a hot smell, could that be from the solenoid??? Thank you for the help, and I mean it!!!
You can try to start it again. It may make that nasty sound again. It may not also. It will take more than a couple of times to ruin the teeth. If it does it again, I would not try it anymore. The hot smell shouldn't be the solenoid since it's only engaged until the car starts. Sometimes the solenoid will only half engage because of weak battery current. Make sure cables and grounds are clean and tight.
