Only one fan on radiator is working

Asked by dklein2015 Jun 23, 2015 at 09:07 AM about the 2004 Toyota Camry LE FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Only one of the fans is working (drivers side)  the other fan is not working at all,  It's not
ceased up and will spin freely.  It has over 180,000 miles and i've never had any
problems.  Should I change the whole fan assy?  and would that make it the easy route to
make sure both fans are up and running for the summer.

check the fuses and relays. if they are good, unplug the fan and put a 12v jumper wire from the battery to it and see if it works. then you will know if it is the fan.

The fan is wired in series, so if the first fan is getting power the second should as well. Sounds like the fan assembly needs to be replaced. about $125.00 for the fan assembly and a few hours to do it yourself...

The second fan is controlled by the a/c switch and a thermostat. It is used for extra cooling when you are running your a/c. I would still check all the fuses and relays, and also test the fan itself. If the fan runs with the jumper wire, then your problem is elsewhere.

I have this exact problem. What I am going to try is to repair the connection to the motor. It seems when the meter is on I get an open circuit "OL" but if I tap on the back of the fan motor I can eventually get some resistance or rather a "beep" from the meter. seems to me that it is a bad connection to the fan motor. I have 395000+ miles on this 05 Rav4. I notice that there was oil build up on the from shroud of the fan housing. I am assuming this had something to do with it. My fan would spin very very slowly for a second or two intermittently. I only noticed this after replacing the radiator today.

See above. If one fan is running and you are concerned about the other one not working turn on the A/C. The second one is wired through the series. There are 2 relays , one for each fan. If the second fan doesn't work with the A/C on check the relay

Also check the wiring harness that connects both fans that sits on top of the radiator. As I replaced mine with another one I had and now both fans turn on. This was my problem on my 2003 Buick century.
