Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2001 Toyota Celica with 215,000 miles on it. I have noticed in the last few days its using a large amount of gas. I filled the tank up on Wednesday and today I have a quater of a tank of gas. I do not smell any gas and it doesnt appear that any inappropriate activities have been going on with my car. Do you have any ideas on what could be causing this?

Leaky fuel injector or bad O2 sensor could be the cause. Check the engine oil level to see if it has increased or is over full. Also, is the check engine light on? The problem could be other things as well.

The check engine light has been on for years. I will take it to Auto Zone and have them plug it on the machine to see if its the O2 sensor this evening. Thank you so much!

clbrown26, would you please estimate miles per gallon, now, and, say a week ago? Thanks

a week ago maybe 16-18 mpg and now Im assuming maybe 7mpg. I filled up on Wednesday and I drive maybe a total of 30 miles a day.

Whoa, each are bad. 7 mpg from a Celica is something wrong, (to state the obvious). Well that's why you are here, and my best suggestion is do what you already said..get an OBDII scan. I wouldn't jump to conclusions about the o2 sensor, as Bob said there are many many possible things. If/when you do get the OBDII codes, come back and one of us will be happy to help you. Do NOT buy the first thing the clerk says you need. Don't waste money on electrical parts that can not be returned. feel free to drop me a PM to remind me, I don't go back over every question..and Corollas are my specialty, and a Celica is not that far away. ----David aka FordNut
