My key will not release from my ignition unless I cut the power to the car by removing the coil from the battery. It it a solenoid issue?

I'll take a piece of that mike. Not solenoid, don't even know what solenoid you are referring to the car has dozens. Ignition switch or safety interlock. Does it have the 7A FE or 1ZZ FE? And you are in the US, right? And what coil? It has 4. One for each cylinder, both of those engines do.
We had same issue with our 98 Corolla, we did replace the ignition switch for that. Plus we ran into a little snag because when replaced the ignition switch the same problem came back. We could start the car but it would not move back past the "acc" and would not release key. The weirdest part was that everytime we disconnect the battery it would release the key. Little did we know that you have to press the shift lever release button that's covered by a small 1/2 cover above the shift the lever and can removed with standard flat head screwed driver. We pressed it and everything was working normal again. Kinda makes me think if that was the whole problem to begin with
