I recently purchased a used engine that came from Japan to replace the bad engine in my 2002 Corollla. My mechanic said the new engine has no place to insert the passing cable. Is anyone familiar with this issue, and is there any way to solve it?

Grey market engines are often times different from US models and sometimes won't pass smog inspections along with other incompatibility issues. What does your mechanic suggest?

He said that he could try and install it, but it wont have much acceleration for passing.
Can he use parts from your old engine to hook this cable up?
If you can manually downshift then you can work around this issue.
He does not think so. In addition, there may be another compatibility issue that you previously alluded to, as the manifold configuration is different.
Its an automatic, so shifting down to first or second?
Yes. If you have a 4 speed auto then downshift to third.
