I had one, Engine/Trans BOTH went out at ~250k and had A LOT I mean A LOT of work done to it.
ok, and that was after 250k though, right? I am looking to maybe buy one that has around 170k on it and am wondering if it is a good buy... I have heard that the engines begin to loose power after 200k... did you find that with yours as well?
I had a 89 and a 90 and 2 91s one of which i still drive and they are good as long as you drive them nice if you drive them hard they start to leak oil at about 160k just a bit at first but by 260k it will be a 2 quart/ tank of fuel habit I have never had any transmission problems and i had one that had over 300k on it. but stay away from the automatics unless it is 4 spd because the 3 spd autos where gutless, they are never in the powerband and just don't accelerate at all. if you are ok with man transmission the 4 and 5 spd are both awesome although I prefer the 5 spd a bit better mileage on the highway
300k miles and more toyotas runs great and lasts long as long as you change yor oil every 1500 -3k and do a tuneup every other year or so any car can last long it all depends on how you take care of it
The one that I want to buy has almost 300,000 KMS on it.
i have a 81 with 230,000

the only real weak point is that the 3ee engine would start leaking oil from the valve guides and the piston rings would start to wear in high-mileage vehicles, but this seems also to stem from poor maintenance. my '93 tercel is at 272,000 mi. and runs pretty good, but i am careful to keep up on the oil changes
I have a 96 tercel with 278,000 and used it for commuting for 9+yrs now. Great car and maintanance is the key for a durable long lasting car. When i bought it it had 53,000 on it and when it reached 100,000 I started using full synthetic oil and had not one problem from it. I change the oil filter every 6-8 thousand miles and although it eats some oil ( worn , tired engine, thin oil) it runs very well and critical timing chain replacment every 80 -90,000 miles!1 So far so good!!

I have a 1986 Toyota tercel with 250k+ on it. I bought it back in 2002 and it had 89k on it. I abused the hell out of the car, the engine lasted up to 248k before the #4 exhuast valve burnd. Then I rebuilt the engine and am still abusing it but not as bad, also the manual trans will not stand up to heavy abuse I should know, becuase I'v broken 3 of them, 2 4 speeds and a 5 speed. But you can get manual transmissions from a junk yard pritty cheap $200 or less. Other then that the car is very reliabil and alway gets you to and from you destination safly.
I have a 1996 with 395000 on it orig trans and engine burns oil but not too much
I have a 1999 with 321000 original kms. Burns half a cup of oil every maybe 700kms. I keep it in good shape; synthetic oil every 10000 I've changed the transmission fluid once spark plugs once. No problems. 16 kms highway 13.7 combined. Automatic. Cheap insurance. I love it.
Got a 97 with 326600 Miles on it. Runs great can't even hear it when idle. Love the little car
I have a 97 Tercel 5 speed manual that I bought with 82k, now has 306k and still going strong, have always changed oil and filter every 3k air filter every 30 to 40k, gas filter every 150k, radiator every 200k and use a can of injector cleaner and a can of Restore every spring and fall.

I have a '98 Tercel 2-door stick original owner. Had lots of work but always worth it. Living on Guam, the big problem now is body work because of salt air.
