2004 Chevy cavalier manual transmission rough idle rough start dragging up hills barely any pick up

Asked by Tracyescribano Feb 10, 2018 at 08:40 AM about the 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I own a 2004 Chevrolet cavalier and one
morning it worked later that night it didn’t.
The mechanic changed the spark plugs
and then said it was the ECM. Bought a
replacement module and car still wouldn’t
start and if it did it stalled out. The
mechanic didn’t do the 3 step procedure
when installing the new module. I did it
myself and the car started right up. Still
could feel that the pick up the car had
before was better than it is now. Last night
the car barely went above 5 MPH. Going
up even small inclines it goes but it’s a
struggle. Could it be the catalytic
converter? It makes choking sounds when
running like the fuel is being blocked

have someone rev the engine and see if a blast of exhaust comes out the tailpipe , is there a rotten egg smell ?, scan for codes even if the light ain't on and get the definitions , find another mechanic

There is no rotten egg smell at all. After I did the 3 step procedure after new ecm instslled she started right up. When she’s first running ( when it does start) it has a choking sound and rumbles a lot.
