Transmission issue??

I have a 2004 Chevy Suburban 1500 LT that has been a wonderful truck,
until.  The other day I was driving and the truck just went neutral.  It would
not shift into any gear and go.  I parked it and had a buddy tow me back to
the house.  The next day I got curious and started the truck and it drove for
about 20-30 yards and did the same thing.  Wash rinse, and repeat the next
couple of days.  I have not tried it since.  Does anyone know what may be
causing this?

The Shifter cable working properly? Fluid level good? If the previous is good then i'd suspect a bad trans.
