4 wd defalts to 2 WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a question about my 4wd on an 02 Avalanche.  I have had the 4wd light on for a while.  I changed out the transfer case shift motor.  When I start the truck the truck shifts into 4wd.  the only way to get it out is to go into "auto" then 2wd by pressing the buttons with on 2 seconds.  I will hear a bunch of clicking from the switch, then all the lights flash on the switch and it goes back to 4wd.  After doing this 3 times, the third time after the lights all flash, the lights will go out and the truck appears to go back into 2wd.  Then no lights will be on the switches at all.  When I turn off the truck, I have to go through the same process again.  To get it back into 2wd.  Am I just seeing the front axel disconnect and that is why I think its shifting?  The code reads a bad computer, but I replaced that and its acting the same.  Any ideas?  Thanks!

I think you have a problem with the transfer case actuator. Have you been driving on dry pavement in 4WD?

So, I have gotten the vehicle into rwd by pressing the buttons in the order I described. When the button is lit up 4wd it is definitely in 4wd. After I push auto then 2wd, all the lights will flash and go back to lighting up the 4wd. I have to do that sequence 3 times. The last time all the lights will turn off. I live on a gravel road so I tested a couple of times and when the lights are off the truck does spin the rear tires with the front tires not grabbing. When the light is on and I spin the tires, all 4 grab and go. Is that what you are asking? The front end does bind on dry pavement if I just move the truck a few feet and don't go through that process. But if I go through the button process, when all the lights go out, the front axle is free and doesn't bind.

I have had what I believe was 2wd, then I took out the fuse for the computer so that it couldn't "re-engage" the 4wd again. The transfer case motor that is on there is 16 months old. I had to replace it in 10/17. It worked fine, and when that motor was bad the code that came up in the scan tool was for a transfer case motor. Now the code is different, it is reading a bad computer. So I put in a new computer and no change. I live in snow country. So the 4wd is nice to have. I emailed Advance auto parts a "nice" email, where I got the motor about how it should last longer, and today they approved to exchange the motor under warranty even though it's more than a year old. Hopefully I will get to it sooner than later cause the bottom is going to fall out on the temperature and the highs are going to be 0 degrees...that is Fahrenheit.

I figured I would give an update. I ended up putting a new transfer case motor in today. now the truck will shift from 2-wheel drive to 4 high. But it will not go into 4 low. Thank you for the advice.

I'm having similar.issues but mine won't come out of 2low. Ever since I got stuck on a stump I can turn my wheel extra long to turn the left tire. It squeaks. The rest of the cars chill but I think I may have bent an axle arm? Any advice. Havnet gotten my stimulas so I don't have cash to replace transfer case motor
