99 Ford F-150

Asked by GuruZJDNV Dec 10, 2017 at 09:56 AM about the 1999 Ford F-150 Work Extended Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Recently replaced power steering pump. Started it up and
a pulley went out; replaced that, it burnt up, replaced it
again and started up the truck. Ran fine for a minute or
so, then started squealing EXTREMELY loud. Shut it off,
pulled the key out, and the truck kept trying to start itself,
gauges were going crazy. So I’ve now unhooked the
battery so it doesn’t drain it or catch fire or something but
I’m at a loss as to what is going on with it. Any ideas?

If one of your pulley-driven accessories seized up? You may also have more than one problem going on. When taking key out did motor diesel or did it not shut off by ignition? I'd get the belt pulleys sorted, make sure they all spin freely/not seized, then tackle run-on condition - it's either ignition related or you have a motor dieseling.

When you turn a key to off and the motor keeps trying to chug along with no ignition. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dieseling - I'm not sure what sort of condition you are describing in your question - a motor that is dieseling or a starter motor trying to engage without input from ignition circuit.

That’s the problem for me as well. I don’t know how to explain it. The truck was running but started squealing. Shut it off, removed the key, and it continued to try to start itself 3 more times before I unhooked the battery.

Okay, that sounds more like a starter engaging when it shouldn't, or staying engaged. I don't think this problem is connected to the pulley problem you had earlier. If the starter engaged while engine was running that might explain the loud squealing and engine cutoff you experienced. You'll need to check what caused the starter to engage without the key switching to "start". Check ignition & starter circuit. Check the starter, starter relay and starter solenoid. Check also the GEM module. Two forums you may find more precise help at are: www.fordf150.net , and www.ford-trucks.com . The 97 to 03 F150's had a problem with the GEM and caused a number of issues, including starter issues, were attributed to it.

Thank you! I will check that out. I was thinking that it may be something with the starter or maybe spark plugs....something with the ignition/firing...but mechanic friends I’ve talked to have they don’t think that’s it (haven’t had anybody actually look at it yet)
