Transmission swap failure

Asked by Doso1117 Jul 16, 2017 at 04:17 PM about the 2002 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2002 z71 suburban, just got the engine
rebuilt. Right when we took it home from shop the
gears stop changing I realize the transmission
didn't have enought oil so thr mechanic added 5
quartz of transmission oil only t have the same
result my transmission failed. I have a sierra 2000
with the exact same transmission which I had
rebuilt a couple of months ago. Because I didn't
want to spend more in rebuilding another trans I
decided to switch trans, the sierra's trans was
working perfectly fine. So I installed the trans into
the suburban. I turn on the engine and it started
rught away, but I could hear a loud noise coming
from the trans, I checked the oil level and it needed
some but it was almost full. I took the truck for a
ride and not even two blocks away the loud noise
stopped and the gears stopped changing. I don't
know what went wrong....any ideas?

What engine was in the 2000 sierra? And did you take out the torque converter at any time during the swap?

The sierra has a 5.8 as well as the suburban and yes we did separate the torque converter to be able to fit the trans easier , at end it was as difficult as it we wouldn't separate the two parts .

Ok, there isn't a 5.8 chevy motor. There is a 4.3, 4.8 or a 5.3. Do you know if the torque converter was seated properly? Before you bolted it to the flex plate it should have been able to spin easily with the trans bolted down to the motor.

My bad yeah its a 5.3. I probably just going to take it to the trans shop it still has warranty and they say they could check it out.
