I got a 94 2.2l 4 banger in my s10. Is a 95 motor compatible and if so is it direct swap ob1 or ob2? looking into a replacement due to blown headgasket and 180k on it.

Im looking into buying a replacement motor for my truck but if i can find a used one in a truck then ill do that. I want to know if i can use a 95 as well as the 94 motors for more options or if that makes it harder than to just stick to a 94 and thats why theyre so expensive to replace?... Any help would be awesome. Once again its a 2.2l s10 1994. Standard with no ac. Heating problem could be heater core clogged or head gasket either way im doing new motor. 180k on motor now.

94-99 are all cross compatable, with all available engines being simple bolt in swaps. you could put as late as a 99 vortec into it.
as far as the heater core goes, check your fan motor. if both ac and heat went out at the same time that is your most likely culprit.
there is no ac in the truck at all, its a basic core motor and the 99 wont bolt to the obd1 side of the truck. 94-95 are obd1 if you get it early enough then they turn to obd2. Also the trannys are different between certain years. The gauges and computeres wouldnt read right if i just bolted in a 99 2.2l.
I have a 94 with A/C bought a 98-99 engine and the head is completely different. Possible but a PITA to complete. We are talking a weak 2.2 here.
U can build them there are a lot of after market performance part available for them
I got 94 2.2 engine, that has 50,000 miles since rebuilt for sale, I bought fo a 2000 s10 won’t work in it because of wiring differences, $800. cjhemb44@gmail.com, local pickup
What town is that 2.2 for sale in?
I have a 94 with the 2.2 5 speed 43k miles for sale in windham ohio.
I bolted on an header 1 into dual exhaust map iat and crank sensor made a very noticeable power increase and now cold air intake with K/N filter even better then I built a surround made of aluminum to block the heat from header and motor escarpment working great I've been in racing all my life I feel gained approx 25 to 45 hp huge for how cheap stuff was for it being it was a dog when my pops got it new in 94
As far as I've noticed after after 95 the engines started to use flexfuel, and the engine blocks will have a cam position sensor. either way in order to use a 96+ you will definitely need to pull the wire assembly and ecm. Which is more work than I would say its worth instead of using the correct year range of only 94-95.
Not sure if its compatible going back a year, I would say no, due to the difference in the engines, even though they are both 2.2L, the 96+ use a cam position sensor where as the 95 did not, only way to make it really work it to use the complete harness assembly with the engine. The engines aren't too expensive, but it is easier to find a 96+ engine than a 94-95 engine, which is probably the biggest reason the 94-95 cost more to replace. The other thing about the 95 2.2l was they were obd1.5, so it wasn't easy to do a diagnosis unless you know the trick.
