2001 Chevy Impala - Won't come out of park

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2001 Impala - the shifter is on the steering wheel console. Can't shift out of park into reverse or neutral.  We changed the brake light switch, but that didn't fix anything, in fact, now with the new one in the brake lights won't go off now so we had to take it out and put the old one back in, which still leaves the brake lights on. So frustrating. We got it for my son's graduation 2 weeks ago. No transmission slipping or prior issues with anything. He came home, parked it, got up the next day and went to leave now it won't shift out of park.  Someone suggested the shift lock solenoid but I can't find any information on where that is for this year, make and model car or how to change it.  Any ideas??
