I have a 01 malibu and the temp hand stop working but no lights on the dash what could be the problem please help

It could be a part of your anti theft system. There seems to be a common problem here.

Turn the ignition in the on position leave it there for 10minutes once the theft system stops blinking turn the ignition in the off position then give it a try it should crank right up. if you have the owners manual it's in there I had this issue I thought something was wrong with another part of my car

It cranks drive the temp hand just doesn't work but the theft light has been on for a while and this just now started happening

I had the check engine light on and Temp gauge stopped working. I replaced thermostat, temp sensor, flushed and replaced antifreeze. After that no check engine light and temp gauge worked perfectly until a few days ago. Remove the fuse for Number 34 20amp fuse in engine compartment. i think fuse 34 is related because the instrument cluster has its electronic circuit which also needs power supply to feeds its gauges this voltage come from the permanent 12 v battery ....34 fuse. you can remove the grey frame on the fascia then u can unplug the auxiliary outlet and cigarette lighter and put the f 34 back on and see what happen. if this doesn't work there is possibility the fault in the ect wiring, unplug the ect and see if the cooling fan come on high speed or not also u can check for a 5 v reference should be on the plug. Start car and Fuel and Temp gauges and dash lights may start working with fuse 37 installed and 34 removed.

Sounds to me like a thermostat got stuck open so the coolant was always going through the radiator so the engine temp could not get up to the value where it should be... so just replace the thermostat and used ur laptop to clear the code. the thremostat is kinda a big job on the malibu so i would go somewhere where they can check the trouble codes because if it is the thermostat it will show up as a trouble code something about the temperature not getting high enough or something and that will tell you for sure before you tear stuff appart
