96 ram 1500 4wd auto trans od light stays on and wont go into od. please help

have you checked fuses? the overdrive is electrically controlled on your truck.

the relay under the hood yes and I just got back from town and my trans temp light is on it does smell a little hot but the fluid is full and clear

check all your other fuses too. dodge is good about putting a whole lot of things on each fuse on the older trucks.
