if you've a tuneup recently air filter plugs timing...check the engine lite to see if any messages have been stored. But...I recommend you change the egr valve straightaway as these are known to bugger up and interfere with normal throttle operation. It's purpose is to recirculate exhaust gas thru the throttle on deceleration...this thing is really stupid but needs to be there to pass your smog check.

Mine tossed out a code P0108 MAP, checked sensor (good) why this code is tossed out is low vacuum in the intake meaning a vacuum leak somewhere or TIMING CHAIN has slipped a tooth. plenum gasket can be a culprit. To check plenum without tearing down the engine, Disconnect EGR and seal both ends. Disconnect AIR return hose to breather and hook vacuum test to it. If you have a vacuum moor than 3 you need a new plenum gasket. You can also look into the intake and if you see oil you need a new one. Mine is bogging way down on acceleration, can't drive it. That tells me timing is retarded and do to chain stretch and gear were throwing the cam out of wack not drawing enough fuel and low pressure in the intake manifold setting of the code P0108 map. All timing chains should be replace at 80K or checked when doing a water pump. I just got this truck ASIS with the 5.9 MAG, it Idles a bit ruff but boggs BAD at 1000 + rpm almost to the point of dieing. This truck has 155,0000 miles so yes I'm replacing the timing chain.

I had 96 Dodge 1500 5.1 bogging problem as well. Replaced the sensors and it did no good. This truck was undrivable and would not idle. I rebuilt the engine put it back in and same thing. Then I got an idea and it worked. CAT was bad, to check it I pulled out the bank one sensor (in front of the CAT) and started it no problem ran like a dream. It released enough pressure so the engine would run. Before doing any thing I recommend doing this first.
