I have a 1998 Dodge 1500 4x4 with a 5.9 liter v8 engine. The first gear is engaging "hitting" hard about 50% of the time when you start up from a stop, or from a slow rolling stop.

When it has this hard engage, It feels like someone has ran into the truck.  Also,
sometimes when braking to a stop, you feel it hit the first gear hard as it is slowing down.
Other than that, it runs great and shifts great after getting started.
Any ideas?
