Engine problems

Asked by GuruPY9XX Jan 15, 2020 at 04:14 PM about the 1998 Dodge RAM 1500 Laramie SLT 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

98 dodge 1500. Changed the battery, started it and
drove about 2 miles. Started running sputtering
some, then i turned into a parking lot where it
sputtered, backfired, and died. Tried different
things to get to start for 30 min before having it
towed. After sitting a couple of hours tried starting
it again and it started up fine and ran at idle until
warm then sputtered, backfired, and died again. I
have no ideas on what the problem would be

Make sure battery has a full charge? Battery cables/connections all good? When it stalls, if it cranks good but won't start, have a helper crank it while you visually check for spark at the plugs? Let the starter motor cool a bit between cycles. Proper fuel pressure and fuel injector pulse? How long since a tune-up? Any applicable trouble codes? Those are the basic checks, in my opinion.
