I have coolant in my oil and the engine sounds rough... what's wrong?

Asked by Daymond Feb 02, 2015 at 11:47 AM about the 1999 Dodge RAM 1500 ST Club Cab RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 99 dodge ram 1500 v8. Was driving it home when it
started to sound bad and was losing power before dying on
me. I checked the oil and there is coolant in the oil pan. After
I got it to crank back over, it idles somewhat hard and when
put in drive, it shakes bad and loads of white smoke comes
from the exhaust.

your motor is blown junk the truck or get a rebulit motor project done right will cost several thousand dollars good luck

You might get away with doing head gaskets, which is likely the problem but for what you would spend, pastaking is probably right. A crate engine if your transmission doesn't have too many miles, if it does then you're wasting your money and it will go next. Time to go shopping..sorry for that news and best of luck.

Depends on if you cracked the heads or just blew the head gaskets. If you cracked the heads you might as well get a new engine

At the very minimum it is likely you have a blown head gasket or a cracked cylinder head. As "FordNut" said, you might get lucky and just need to replace head gaskets. If this is a high mileage truck it may not be cost effective to repair it.

you may have sheered a tooth or two in your time & chain .or sretched it enough to jump time & get hot.possibly knock or overheat from lack of oil flow I would not jump to conclusions I would have a real pro look at it
