What is this transmission noise?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2001 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2 auto.  When I start the truck, there is a significant
"whirring" noise coming from the transmission. It seems to dissipate some
after it's warmed up, but still there. Is this tranny on its way out, or is there
something I can/should do before removing/replacing?  Thanks

I wonder if the starter is not disengaging and causing the noise. Do check the ATF level and you may want to go ahead and change the fluid and filter.

It does seem like you have the idea of the sound. I haven't come across this scenario before, but of course anything is possible. I think the problem may be more internal but per your thoughts will check the starter/torque converter ring gear for any telltale signs. The fluid seems fine, but will take that into consideration as well. Thank you!!

If the noise is internal then you may see some clues when you drop the pan. If the noise is the trans then it is likely that it is on the way out but you could take it to a transmission shop to get their opinion.

Mine was the cover plate (dustcover ) on the front of the tranny rubbing on flex plate.

Hello, I have a 2013 1500 Express Crew Cab 4x4. It's making a strange harmonic sound. It sounds like it could be coming from the rear of the truck. Does anyone know what this might be? Thank you in advance! Connie
