2003 Dodge Ram 1500 dying/sarting problem

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 will be driving down the road fine and all of a sudden it will die. It won't sputter or anything first, it will just die. When it does that, I have trouble starting it back up. It will take a few attempts. Also, when it is cold out, the truck has trouble starting. It will turn over, but the engine will only get to like 1000 Rpm or less and it will die. I have been told that I have a cylinder misfiring before. Could it be that? Any other ideas?

I would start with testing the resistance of your ignition coil (primary and secondary resistances) and your Crankshaft Position Sensor (located where the transmission mates to the engine on the passenger side - easiest way is to remove main connecter from the BCU/ECU and test the appropiate pins) while both are cold and compare to the value you will find online easily. When it starts acting up retest both and compare the values against the specs. I had a problem with a Ram like that where it wouldn't start, I tested then replaced the ignition coil (tested bad) and it fired right up then died a couple mins later... I tested the CPS which was bad and when I replaced that it started and ran fine again. Hope this helps
