Asked by Bigbadbillsr Mar 27, 2013 at 12:10 AM about the 2006 Dodge RAM 1500 Laramie Mega Cab 4WD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have a 2006 dodge ram 1500 Laramie 5.7 hemi, it recently started dying on me while driving and there is no
pattern to it, it will start right back up afterwards. I have no idea what it could be. The truck is throwing no codes

I'd have to say at the outset, break out the garden hose and remove any corrosion where the ground cable 0/1 battery cable bolts to your chassis/ground, be sure it's metal on metal and can support 300 cold cranking amps, next the 0/1 battery connection to the block so the starter can get the power it needs, wirebrush the battery connections and terminals as well as the little lolipop with a hole in it positive side connector. Load Test and charge up the battery to make sure it still has enough life left in it 7year old battery can be marginal- this is your problem...intermittent ground...final diagnosis...gavel down

I did what you suggested, and my truck didnt die all day, and on the last stretch home it died twice, any other suggestions ?
migration_judge_roy answered 11 years ago
died as in no electrical spark, or staved of fuel, or bad combustion?
migration_judge_roy answered 11 years ago
I'd suggest a bad cap or rotor, but this vehicle has neither- just some coil packs and high-voltage wires...you might check the resistance between the coil packs (if they are arranged like a cavalier) have to acquaint myself with the systems on your truck now- coil packs...prime suspect-
Bigbadbillsr answered 11 years ago
Just turns off like electrically shut off..restarts normally first attempt. I will try the coil pack today
migration_judge_roy answered 11 years ago
if it's an OEM battery, it's curtains for it anyways, why not pony up for a real good one like an Interstate which carries a guarantee, pro-rating on your existing one (which ain't worth nothin' but scrap value)~

I have a dodge ram 2005 6cyl. 3.7, i have start up problems, it starts fine, but then if i go somewhere, shut it off then it won;t start again , then sometimes it start without any problem, it is really intermittent. can anyone out there help me please?
I have a 2010 1500 4x4 Laramie and mine did the same thing. I replace my plugs first thinking this was the cheapest solution but that didn't work. My old plugs looked really good and the truck shut off while driving, again. I checked my fuel and it was good. I checked for any loose connection on the starter and every where else I could think of and all seemed to be fine. I finally replaced my ECM/PCM as my last resort, but also because after shopping I walked outside and my truck was "running"!!!! It fixed the shut off problem and everything else, for months anyways. Now just last night it started again shutting off while driving. I can only hope that it's the ECM / PCM again and maybe it's under warranty. I bought it at the dodge dealership so here's keeping my fingers crossed!
I had the same problem with my 1996 Ram 1500. A diagnostic test was performed by a Dealer and it was revealed that a Sensor was bad.
06 ram 4.7 died while driving cleaned IAC, new egr still died. Got under truck evap box by the gas tank had a large vacuum line had got grease on it and expanded put a clamp on it has not died in over a year so far. 25cent fix but works well.

Hello Cupcake5 it would be great to know what sensor was bad
I had this Problem was 6 months to track it down ended up as a vacuum leak around my Map Sensor put a little silicon around were it seals and have not had any issue now for over a year. Hope this helps.
I have a 1999 dodge Durango it started cutting off out of no where and would start back up but now it's taking longer to start back up

What happens when my 2005 dodge Durango gets to hot then when I stop put water in it now won't start why not
I've read that this is s dealer recall problem with the safety. The dealer says it has something to do with a voltage spike in a sensor for the airbags. It shuts off to keep your airbags from deploying. I have yet to get dealer to fix mine because of a back order on part to fix problem

I have same problem already done Recall AND tune up Been to dealer twiced headed there again If this is such a problem why the hell hasnt dodge done something? And my girlfriend has a 2008 300 Hemi doing samething Same story dealer cant Figure it out..Guess I made bad judgement going from Chevy truck to a Dodge
I have an 06 1500 and it's not starting. Has fuel spark crank and combustion but dosnt stay running for more than a second or two. No major codes cylinder 2 misfire and temp sensor but nothing else . Battery is good replaced it checked maf its good intake is clean fuel rail has gas, I'm running out of ideas someone said might be map sensor but I don't want to replace random parts without conformation they don't work
CHECK THIS...CHECK THIS....my truck would die right after start or once in a while while driveing for no reason?? The "weight of my key chain was turning the ignition off" the slightest preasure turned off the ignition.....with the continious smooth wearing operation of many starts over the years. Also the ignition key also would intermittently frezz at times (not turning) so i would have to tap the end of the key in the direction of the coloumn, to release. Thank you readers for telling me what you tried so i looked else where. Good Job
I had problems with my 07 Ram1500, 4.7 intermittently stalling and throwing random DTC codes. The wiring harness from the computer runs over the back of the passenger side cylinder head. Over time the harness rubs and gets hot causing problems with the wiring. On mine it was the sensor feedback wire that was causing problems. Taped it up good and zip tied the harness to the transmission dipstick tube. Problem solved. Originally found this by wiggling the harness around back there with the truck running, and it killed the engine.
2007 ram 1500 4x4 5.7 hemi 65k miles random cutting off after 1 to 2 minute warm up. Engine would crank back up immediately (while coasting in neutral) then randomly die (from aprox 5 seconds later to 60 plus seconds later) until I returned home (less than 2 miles). After some experimenting discovered engine would not cut off in park, neutral, 1st gear, 2nd,3rd, tow/haul, or overdrive off mode. Only cuts off in regular "D" high gear so I'm able to drive normally with "Tow/Haul" selected on shifter. I was imagining it shut off when the torque converter locked up but that's just an unsupported guess. Was able to drive to Dodge dealer 23 miles away in this mode without any problems. Their recommendation is to replace all 8 coil packs and 16 spark plugs for $1160 based on info they have received but can't quote back to me. They feel confident that this will fix the problem but they are not 100% sure. April 2018
Just a thought...!!!! my 2006 Dodge 1500 5.7 engine would just kill on me. No Reasoning for it to die.. For me it was the ignition start switch. I had a weighted key chain and a bump, my knee, pedalum of keys at braking would turn truck off. Also not turn off a few times. Check your ignition switch. tsk

Been lookin at 2006 Dodge Ram Quad. Now im abit concerned!! Will ve doing long g drives, dont need to die in the Arizona heat!! Been chevy man ,prob will stay ther look for The. LS. BIGBLOCK TRUCK...
My truck keeps cutting off going down the road and engine light comes on in the both of light comes on after a few seconds to put it in neutral or pull over to the side and will start back up and then get halfway down the road and it will die again what causes that it's asking for your opinion when you have the same similarities with other people's problems with the same type of vehicle
I'm having the same problem with my 2005 ram 5.7. Did you find any solution's for your's?
Maverick530 answered 6 years ago
I have the same problem with my 07 5.7 hemi. I'll be driving down the road and all of a sudden it'll shut off I'll pull over wait for about 20 minutes start the truck up again and drive a little bit more and then it'll shut off again. Already put in new spark plugs that wasn't the problem, just can't figure it out what it could be???
I have dodge ram 1500 hemi 2004 when engine cold keeps cutting out until 20 mins heating, I would press the gas to keep the revs high so it would not cut out. then it will run fine as long as I don't go high speed like 60+ miles it would cut out, jolt and start right up. I have replaced fuel pump, filter, oil changes, replacing spark plugs and high voltage wires today. Next will be the IAR block, nothing is fixing it up. So to recap, I can constantly in the morning start the truck keep the revs up which the the engine is trying to cut out. The engine light flashes every time, no trouble codes. after about 20 mins it will stop doing it.
@Maverick530 Did you ever find a solution? We have a 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT. While driving it shuts off and then will start right back up but then shut off again within a few miles. It continues to do this over and over again until we leave it sit for at least 30 or more minutes. Then it will go several days or weeks without issue. We cannot seem to figure out a reason it’s doing this! We’ve replaced the fuel pump, ignition coil packs and spark plugs. Still having issues!
possibly it be the crankshaft position sensor. and has no code, but that was my mercedes, call a dodge dealer, and ask them, they may tell you exactly what it is.

Attention: LClark13.. I found the problem!!.. the ignition wiring running alongside the motor underneath was worn down and was making contact with the engine block. After putting new spark plugs and everything else that I was told was the problem and all seemed to fail finally a neighbor down the street went underneath the truck and found the problem.. I hope you find this useful.good luck
Thanks Maverick530 we will check that out! It’s currently at the dealership having diagnostics done but so far they’ve found nothing. They are trying to get it to stall but it just did a few days ago so it may be a week or more before it acts up again! Frustrating issue to say the least!
I have a 06 5.7 liter hemi. Was running great still does except randomly in reverse or one time around a slow corner it died hit key starts right back up. All new plugs one new coil cause only one was bad. Check engine light is on but won't have computer till tonight any ideas
Out of 34 answers only one made any sense if a check engine light dose not come on the ign switch and fuel pump and wiring to the pump are not part of the system and a short would blow a fuse or burn look between the cab and bed see if there's a lot of dirt on the tank look there first and you would no of your keys where the problem if you have a brain
Update to the stalling issue with our 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 hemi. The dealership was unable to witness it stall so we brought home and continued driving it. It continued to stall off and on and then finally started to stall daily about 15 minutes into driving. We took it to a different dealership that was able to properly diagnose the problem which ended up being the crankshaft position sensor. Replaced that and it runs great! Thanks for everyone’s help and suggestions here!
@Guru7T32P....sounds like you don't have a brain, wires were rubbing engine block over and over causing it to short and no fuses ever blew or burned...don't be so obtuse

I have the same problem right now qith my 2005 ram hemi. I'll be driving and dies out of nowhere. It fires right back up. But my sputters once and awhile. Just a real fast sputter like it is losing fuel, then its all good. Have no idea...
2004 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi. I had this same problem, I replaced all the sensors and kept getting the same codes. I checked all the wiring and found nothing. I read a response on this issue that said to check rubbed wires. When I did that I found that the first connector to the computer was a little loose. I taped it tightly and made sure it had a good connection. No problems since. The first symptom was turns, and bumps. Symptoms that could not be repaired with part replacements. The problem was data, they came from the same point of information, IE check the information circuit.

2006 Dodge Magnum SRT8 stalls , sometimes restarts sometimes does not. Also several times it just went to full throttle without stepping on gas. Tried many things non worked. Electronics troubleshooter found the problem in one hour. Replacing accelerator pedal fixed this , who would have thought ???
