Brakes squeal but it's not brake pads!

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I checked all 4 wheels this weekend and pads are fine.  I bled the brakes but the brake pedal is still soft and pushes in too far.  It only squeals at last point of stop and not every time.  Any suggestions?

Dismantle your front and rear brakes. You may have to pull the bolts out of the sliders and make sure they haven't rusted up. If the slides aren't working properly, it will cause the pads to have constant pressure from the piston. If you live in a winter state with road salt, it most likely is a gummed up slide. Use never seize to lube the slider bolts. After inspecting the slides, remove the pads and depress the caliper pistons with a large C-clamp. If piston doesn't depress, you have a seized piston. Once the piston is fully compressed, have someone slowly push the brake pedal. Make sure the piston moves back out. Don't push peddle to the floor. Just see if the piston begins to move. Re-compress the piston and reassemble the brakes. Do the same for the rear. If everything functions properly and the brakes are still spongy, your master cylinder may be on it's way out. I wouldn't replace that until I did the full brake inspection.

I have a 2003 Camry le and had a problem with rear brakes which are shoes. There is an unusual problem that year - the self adjusters are also the spreader bar and collapse inside the middle section that you cannot see but do it slowly over a few days. I had adjusted the brakes and checked them a week later when the problem returned and they were 25 clicks too loose again. I found an article explaining the problem, changed the adjuster and all is well. P.S. First I used an aftermarket. Don't. Go to the dealer. Good Luck
