1996 mercedes sl320 alarm

Asked by Mattbatt Oct 07, 2018 at 06:14 AM about the 1996 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class SL 320

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I work in a garage and recently got a 1996 sl320 in and the alarm won't stop going off. It starts and runs and moves but the alarm will not stop blaring. It sounds in cycles. Any ideas on how to stop it?

Thank You. How involved is deactivating the system? There is no indicator light on the dash, just the extremely annoying alarm.

What you may be experiencing is the functioning of the "Tow Away" alarm. My 2001 SL500 and, probably lots of the other 129 series SLs, have this feature. To quote (page 43) of my Owner's Manual, "the vehicle lamps will flash and an alarm will sound when someone attempts to raise the vehicle". The vehicle lights will continue to flash for three minutes and the alarm will sound for 30 seconds, "even if the vehicle is immediately lowered". I frequently forget to switch off this alarm when I jack-up one side of the car to work on the brakes or rotate the tires. To deactivate the alarm turn the ignition key to position 1 or 0, or remove the key from the steering lock, press the top half of the tow away alarm switch (center console, it's the one with a drawing of a car with a tow hook). The indicator lamp on the switch will illuminate briefly to indicate that you have successfully switched of the alarm.
