This is a common problem with diesel vehicles. They don't like getting air sucked into the fuel lines. You need to prime the fuel system and purge any air out of it before it will be able to start. These systems SHOULD be self-priming, but I am not totally sure. We didn't get diesel E53s in the US, so I can only tell you so much. I would search around for info on this on a European BMW forum like Bimmerforums.co.uk.
