my 1997 golf automatic transmission appears to be slipping. are there any easy system checks that can be made?

on an incline the car will roll backwards unless the engine rpm's are increased.
inorder to get the car moving forward engine speed must be increased substantially to get the car moving.

This is not an uncommon situation as on steep inclines even an auto transmission can roll backwards a bit. I have seen this on my parents' driveway with all of my vehicles, as their driveway is at about a 45 degree angle to the road.
