I personally own a 2002 24V Golf VR6, I am very happy with it. It's very well balanced with little if any vibration, very torquey at low revs, plenty of power, I get 26-29mpg in town depending on how I drive but as comparison only 23-24 on the freeway because the 6sp manual is so closely geared. Ignition coils are the only thing you really have to keep an eye on but they are only $50 a piece through the VW dealership by me. I use mine as a daily driver and Auto-X race car and it's competitive with and will beat cars puting out substantially higher power.
