My 96 jetta will not start

drove car home from work. Next morning would not start. Lots of cranking power left in battery. Appears to have spark at coil wire and plugs. I do smell gas out of exhaust. Do not know what is wrong.

you probley have a bad crank sensor or throtle position sensor

Yes, if you smell gas out of the exhaust, it's flooded. It could also be a problem with your fuel pressure regulator or injectors -- too much fuel flow into the cylinders. Let it sit for awhile and try again, don't crank it too much so you don't flood it. You'll probably have to have this towed in to a mechanic to figure out the problem, there are a lot of variables here.
same thing happened to me on my 88 jetta and it turned out to be the fuel pressure regulator and i did it myself
