Reverse pops out over 2000 rpms???

Asked by Angela Jun 27, 2017 at 10:46 PM about the 1998 Volkswagen Jetta GT

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 98 vw Jetta gt 2.0 5 speed. The reverse
works however it makes a wierd clunking noise/
wind-up noise if I'm backing up a hill I can't go over
2000 rpms or it pops out of gear into neutral with a
loud clunk (assuming that noise after popping out
is tranny from the gear slipping) this is my first vw
but not my first 5 speed I know nothing about vw
but would like to learn to keep the car. Any
suggestions would be highly appreciated. :)

the clunking may well be a chipped gear tooth, that would tend to walk the shift fork away from engaged ,,, slow down and hold the stick in gear, also low gear lube will often cause kick out in forward gears for sure
