What could be wrong with my car?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2001 volkswagen jetta 1.8t, 5 speed. It has trouble starting up in the cold weather, We've replaced the battery and it still has the issue. My check engine light is on we havent tested it out yet for codes. My spark plugs where replaced less than 6 months ago but the coil packs were replaced about two years ago because of a recall. The wires are not in the best shape.. It starts fine in warm weather and drives okay, it does have a slight idle issue and i have to let it warm up for a few mins otherwise it will buck and stall out on me. Lastly sometimes when I turn the key theres a high pitch noise that comes right after, not sure what that could be either?

I'd recommend checking the codes. Once you know the code you'll have a better idea how to tackle the problem.

Also is it only cold weather or is there moisture in the air (snow, rain)? Could point to the coil pack again. I had to do mine for that reason.

Thanks for the reply! It was a pcv vacuum hose, the elbow was broken. We sealed it up and it's running great. We also think my radio was shorting to ground so we took that out for now. (My car has multiple wiring problems). But it's starting great!
