2001 Jetta Wagon 2.0 wont start

Battery old, but ok - fully charged
replaced starter, it works
engine turns, recently replaced coil pack, pulled plug and saw spark
no fire up/turn on
I'm thinking fuel system, what should I look at first?

Was the check engine light on? You should scan for codes. Basics should include pulling the plastic top timing belt cover out of the way and make sure the timing belt is turning the camshaft around as it should. Sometimes the crank position sensor goes bad, that would do what you're experiencing. As for the fuel system, there's a port near the injectors that can be accessed to check fuel system pressure. Again, scanning for codes should be your next step though.

That shouldn't be related to your no start problem. Crank position and fuel pump issues can prevent the car from starting without showing a fault code--
Looks like the timing belt is bad, how can I determine if there is damage? I had cranked it multiple times. No bad sounds that I can tell.

Easiest way is to set up a belt and see if the car has compression in all its cylinders, or runs on all four cyls. Unfortunately, most likely you'll find that you've got bent valves.
