Tansmission

Asked by GuruXS1HH Oct 27, 2018 at 12:03 PM about the 1999 Volkswagen Beetle 2 Dr GL Hatchback

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Last night my 99 gl beetle started acting fucky.
Came into town in fifth gear, went around a corner
and it jerked. I didnt let off the clutch or anything.
From that point on it started not wanting to take
off, and jerking when I would start moving.  This
morning I started it up and ran it through gears.
Backing up and going forward, seemed just fine.
Drove down the street and back and it tried to kick
itself out of 4th gear, then started the jerking again
taking off. Also had a squeak that sounded like it
came from my tranny.  Anyone able to help me
out?

I honestly have no idea, I asked my brother because hes owned several gti's and he cant even tell me. It didn't start showing any issues until last night, it did sound like the throw out bearing might be going out because it has a whine as I drive.

Throw out bearings make noise when you depress the clutch, not when you drive. I suggest you have a mechanic look at it. I suspect you damaged the clutch or pressure plate when you lugged it in 5th gear at that corner.

The corner isnt a bad one or one that would require you to slow down for. The speed limit around it is 35 and I was doing 30. I have someone coming to look at it here soon just gotta wait for them to get here. I've never had this problem with any of my other manual transmissions so I'm ignorant to what's going on. But thank you for the tip man.

100% sure it's the transmission itself. I lost 1st through 4th gear, any help on finding a master rebuild kit for it?
