did I blow my engine?

Asked by bradc Feb 08, 2011 at 08:26 PM about the 2002 Volkswagen Beetle GL

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

my beetle oil light came on and while driving it started to make a tapping noise
then it sounded like something was scraping so I pulled over it smoked a little
but I don't remember what color the smoke was I did not know that would be
important but it only smoked a little.  I pulled over turned of the car and when I
restarted it was still making noises and then I shut it off and would not start after
that.  Now it just clicks but won't start.  It left a puddle of oil on the street.  Did I
blow my engine?

rod bearings are toast. usually they are the first to go. for future reference, when the oil light comes on, stop right then!! this means turn key off and coast to the side of the road.
